The rationale behind the building project is:

Rationale for rebuilding
The current building was built in the 1890s. A further section comprising of toilets and a kitchen area was added in the 1940s and in the 1980s a second storey was added over part of the main hall. Due to this piecemeal approach the current building is quite unsuitable for the needs and aspirations of a growing, vibrant, outward-looking church. The current building has very limited disabled facilities and due to its age and construction are very difficult to install without seriously limiting the use of the building for other events Three solutions have been explored:

Renovation
We have obtained quotes from builders on work needed over the next 10 years to bring the current building up to an acceptable standard. These included a new roof to the main hall (£35,000), new floor to the main hall (£10,000), new porch (£15,000), refurbished lavatories (£10,000) to include disabled facilities, improving the appearance of the exterior (£5,000), extended use of loft space (£20,000), modernisation of utilities including wiring (£5000) and solving damp problems (£5,000). Total work has been estimated at over £100,000 and would involve decreasing available room space to accommodate extra toilet facilities. We have rejected this plan as it is a short term solution, in 10 – 15 years time further work would be required. It would also leave us with less space and fewer rooms and cause major disruption for very little gain. Appendix 2 shows a report obtained on the state of repair of the building.

Rebuild on New Site
Over the last 15 years we have been actively looking for a plot of land in the local area on which to build. We have applied to the council, school and local army barracks in order to purchase available land. All of these have proved unsuccessful. We also put in a bid for a plot of land on the main street and a nearby warehouse but both were sold to higher commercial bidders.

Rebuild on Current site
The only viable option remaining is to re-build on our current site.
